Latest on IVF

Reports have come up indicating dramatic progress made in the field of IVF technologies.  First and foremost is a report that a team of Oxford University researchers says that in near future, that is within 18 months' time they shall be in a position to introduce new egg testing procedures cutting the expenditure to half.  IVF cost  is presently on the higher side in western countries and comparatively less in Asian countries like India especially.  Hence medical tourism to countries  with lower costs is definitely a good proposition to avail this benefit   But the new procedure  introducing simplified and error free tests to select good egg  is definitely another great achievement.  Another advantage is that it eliminates the trial and error methods done at present.  If interested,  you may read the media report.

Do You Face Problems Affecting Memory?

Do you face problems affecting memory?  Concentrate eating chicken and eggs says, Rhoda Au, Phd , Associated Professor of Neurology at Boston University School of Medicine.  After a research study conducted on 1400 persons for a prolonged period of 10 years, the team came to the conclusion that Choline,  a nutrient   largely available in eggs and chicken is helping to enhance memory,  .
Choline is essential for body to remain healthy and its source is mainly fatty meat and eggs. Those who are affected with dementia may therefore start eating more chicken and egg, of course under advise from their dietitian.
Another study   by Dr.Steven Zeisel based on data from NHANES 2003-2004 brought to notice that American people older men and women, childrenand pregnant women are found to be deficient in choline intake and has advised adequate intake as 425 mg for women and 550 mg for men per day. And in case of pregnant and breast feeding women the need for choline is greater since growing child needs more of it for development.

How Much Salt Do You Require?

What is the optimum level of salt intake? Common salt known by chemcial name sodium chloride has been described as the enemy number one, in hyper tension cases and doctors have been advising against salt intake.  But a recent study reveals that low intake may lead to high cholesterol level and endanger life.  A study by Dr. Niels A Graudal from Copenhagen University has published an article in American Journal of Hypertension mentioning that low intake of sodium is not a positive signal to people especially white people on whom trial was taken.  So a debate is going on among scientists  in favor and against salt consumption  and the patients are on a dilemma, which advise they should follow. In view of this controversy, a public meeting has been convened by US FDA  to instruct agencies monitoring standards in eating houses.  Read for more details.

How to Avoid a Stroke?

Stroke is equally dangerous as a heart attack. High cholesterol and blood pressure are attributed here too. A diabetic with smoking habits and no physical activity is more likely to get an attack.  So it is necessary to change life style and monitor blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar level very frequently. Latest information provided by nurologist suggests inclusion of non-vegetarian items in the food to avoid vitamin B12 deficiency which may lead to increased level of homocystein (amino acid) produced naturally in the body.  So they suggest treatment with B12 and B6 and folic acid supplimentation in cases where a tendency for stroke noticed.  Any asymmetry noticed in smile, inability to lift both arms or variation in speech and blurred vision are signals which require urgent medical attention.

Which Way You Greet Others?

Which is the perfect way to greet others when you meet them?  Is it through a handshake, hug or just facial expressions or body movements like bowing, keeping our body out of reach to the guest?  If you have not thought about it seriously, it is time to do so.  Handshake and hugs are custom to west but not at other places in east like Japan where children are taught the perfect way to bow before others while greeting them.  In places like India it is namasthe(folding hands) to greet others.  But generally handshakes are accepted world wide as the usual expression of welcome greeting and universally followed.

But a recent study reveals it is not scientifically safe to do handshake as it is an easy way to spread virus.Nathan Wolfe, a virus expert from California has recently advised to avoid handshake and follow other methods like Japanese way of bowing or even touching one's elbow instead of handshake to prevent virus spreading.  It is relevant in the wake of findings that Flu Virus can survive more than 24 hours on objects of contact and remain infectious.  So let us regulate handshakes and restrict it to escape the dangers and think about alternate modes like bumping fists(ex. Barack Obama and his wife) or the Japanese way of bowing.  Read report

So this is a cause for worry to regular fliers.   There is a long history of mishaps occurring due to this over dependence which has been revealed by Associated Press in their report

Has Your Marital Status Got Anything With Your Figure?

Researchers at Ohio State University headed by Dmitry Tumin has made some connection between marital status and weight gain and its varying effects on men and women.  After scrutinizing answers from 10071 men and women who participated in a survey , the team has reached on the conclusion that in the cases of men it will help them to remain trim and maintain good figure provided they remain married.  But they start to gain weight no sooner than they do get divorced.  In the case of women, they put on weight after getting married.  probably due to lack of time for exercise.  Or may be due to their loosing interest on body maintenance after achieving a husband.  But the research is silent on how bodies of women react after divorce.

So women who want to keep up the figures can do so by not getting married and men who desire to maintain figure should not get divorced.

news4note: The Secrets of 100 Year's Life

news4note: The Secrets of 100 Year's Life: "A new health report says longevity is connected to genes than life style. No matter whatever bad traits you are indulging into, like drink..."

The Secrets of 100 Year's Life

A new health report says longevity is connected to genes than life style.  No matter whatever bad traits you are indulging into, like drinking, smoking, eating fast food etc., you may live for 100 years if  genes you inherited support you.  I do not know how many takers would there be for this  new theory as it goes against all prevailing norms of health management. Amy Winehouse  who lost her life recently, allegedly due to excessive drinking and drug abuse would not have met her tragic end this way.  Or is it because she inherited a bad gene?

While not contenting the new report, one may assure good health and modify the gene by strengthening vital organs like, heart, lungs, kidney, brain etc., by following a good life style.   A wayward life style is sure to weaken your vital organs to affect the quality of life no matter how so ever long it may be extended.

How to Escape from Memory Loss?

As age grows, memory loss is a common problem faced by all.  They forget things easily and most vital information some times are lost from their memory.  In today's world every one has to remember a lot of things like pin numbers, passwords, your vehicle numbers,  phone numbers and what not.  If you find it difficult to remember them at right time you will be a looser.   Some say it is because,  as age grows human brain shrinks in size to give longer life span.

As age grows working memory or what is called short term memory gets reduced.  Researchers from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut has conducted their experiments on monkeys to find out that younger animals retain their memory for a longer period than old ones.

Now Scientists have come up with a suggestion to use Guanfacine a low cost drug used to treat Blood pressure as a treatment to check memory loss.  The side effects of using it for a prolonged period is not known yet.  But when one is conscious of this disability, he can always endeavor to rectify it by adopting certain measures. However, let us hope some progress is being made by scientific community to solve this inherent human disability.

Many of our daily items of food are having antioxidants.  Important among them are blackberries, strawberries, cherries, red grapes, oranges, plums etc. in fruits and Spinach, Broccali flowers, Beets, Onions etc. in vegetables.
Doctors are of different opinions on administering antioxidants and improve quality of sperm.  Some  are of the opinion that it is not good to use antioxidant tablets to improve sperm quality rather than to find out out root cause of defective sperm and treating for it. Barring aside scientific and research related advices, there is no harm in prospective male members to include these items of food discussed above in their daily intake.

Green Energy at Your Doorstep

Nature is the best source of energy.  The sunlight, water, wind etc. pouring in harmless supply in abundance. The solar energy, wind energy and hydroelectric all are coming under green energy.  But the problem so far has been that man went after artificial generation of power like nuclear, potentially harmful  and dangerous to his own existence.  Scientists in their efforts to harness natural source have made a break through lately.  A team of Scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology has made an artificial leaf of the size and shape of a playing card made from silicon .  This thinner device when immersed in a gallon of water exposed to sunlight can provide electricity sufficient  enough to the need of a house. Water contains sufficient quantity of hydrogen to meet the energy need of the world, but separation of it from accompanied oxygen has been a major problem so far. But this device enables to do so without much expense, splits water into hydrogen and oxygen with the help of sunlight  and then hydrogen is stored in a fuel cell. Let us wait for its commercial launching of this dream project.
